Networking with kids: a guide for a balanced use of the web

The health risks due to the abuse of smartphones are growing more and more: children are increasingly dependent on them. The guide "In rete con i bambini" and the itinerant training aimed at teachers, paediatricians and parents and promoted by the Police, Anci, Google and Unicredit Foundation are underway.

Were interviewed about 10mila children between 9 and 18 years for the project "Networking with Kids" promoted by the State Police, the Italian Society of Pediatrics, the National Association of Italian Municipalities (Anci), Google and the UniCredit Foundation.

The aim of teachers, parents and paediatricians is to guide digital natives towards a balanced relationship with the web. About half of the kids interviewed (47%) are addicted to smartphones without realizing it. 41% spend more than 3 hours per day in front of an electronic device, 38% use the smartphone before falling asleep and 21% turn it on as soon as he opens his eyes in the morning, while 24% use it during the studio.

Health risks manifest themselves in the form of low concentration in the study and in daily activities (24%) and feeling of burning in the eyes (21%). They follow pains a neck and back (12%), insomnia (10%) and disorders of'humor (7%). Only 1 in 4 claims not to accuse any symptoms.

At the same time, however, there are many opportunity related to digital: develop research skills, enhance the sense of competence and self-efficacy, find a space for one's creativity, encourage socialization.

For these reasons, it was created a guide which addresses the various aspects useful for making navigation as safe as possible. Starting with a chapter on the advantages of the web for children, the guide explores issues related to the main risks of the web and how to avoid them, how to protect privacy and the rules for experiencing the web safely and in a balanced way.

The second phase of the project will start in January, will be organised training courses in various Italian regions aimed at teachers, parents, paediatricians and police operators.
