Ilva: the ArcelorMittal plan provides for 4 thousand redundancies, it is a clash with the unions

900 cuts in the Genoa plant. Arcelor Mittal has however declared that it will hire 10 new workers. The negotiating table with the Government kicks off on Monday, there will be a clash between the unions and Minister Calenda. Bentivogli's (Fim) response is harsh: "If this approach is confirmed in Monday's meeting with Minister Calenda, recourse to general mobilization will become inevitable".

The recovery process of the Ilva Group is about to begin, but the path seems somewhat tormented. Arcelor Mittal, the global steel giant based in Luxembourg, has declared its intention to hire 10.000 workers from scratch, which it will select upon acceptance of the conditions imposed by the company, with the signing of a conciliation report.

In detail, 7.600 would be employed in Taranto, 900 in Genoa, 700 in Novi Ligure, 160 in Milan, 240 in other sites. As for the subsidiaries, 160 employees are expected at Ism, 35 at Ilvaform, 90 at Taranto Energia. In addition, 45 executives are planned. To these numbers are added the French employees of the companies Socova, Tillet which fall within the perimeter of the group.

There is talk of 4.000 redundancies, distributed across all sites: 600 places will be cut in Genoa. The redundancies, according to what was declared by Am InvestCo and confirmed by the Government, will be used in the environmentalization activities of the Taranto site managed by the Extraordinary Administration.

For those hired, the unions attack, there will be a new employment contract, thus renouncing seniority and company supplementary payments and thus determining a consistent and unacceptable wage cut.

The response from the unions arrived promptly: “If this is Mittal's attitude towards direct workers – denounces Fiom CGIL – the risk is the social massacre of related workers. For Fiom, on the basis of what has been formalized by Arcelor Mittal, there are no conditions to open a negotiating table.

The only possible response to this provocation is a strong conflicting action by all workers. A meeting will be held at the Ministry of Economic Development on Monday 9 October, during which the government will explain its position regarding the decisions of Arcelor Mittal.

Marco Bentivogli, Fim Cisl general secretary, is also tough: "Some establishments will start mobilizing already in the next few hours"
