For the first time the low-cost symbol in the world begins to wobble. After 20 years of active and profitable presence in Italy, in 2012 Ikea recorded the first decrease in turnover (-2,6%, 1,6 billion euros).
“The pressure on consumption deriving from the crisis is also felt by us – said the managing director of Ikea Italia Lars Petterson – Even the first months of 2013 show a slight decrease in revenues but we don't intend to touch the investments and employment levels that currently involve over 6.200 employees”. The food sector went against the trend, which in 2012 grew by 1,9% on an annual basis despite the scandals on the quality of some of the foods sold.
“Our goals” – continued Petersson – concern sustainability. We want to take a step forward in that direction, both by helping customers live a more sustainable life at home and by aiming for energy independence, resource saving and separate waste collection". Meanwhile, the 21st Italian store is on its way, which will open in Pisa in about a year.
