Hera obtains biomethane certification

The Herambiente plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese was recently inaugurated. It is a production process traced to ensure maximum transparency. The "National certification scheme for biofuels and bioliquids" certified by Bureau Veritas Italia guarantees the traceability and mass balance of the system.

Hera obtains biomethane certification

Each cubic meter of biomethane di Herambiente, company of Hera Group and major national operator in the treatment of waste, will have its origin and a place of provenance from which it was obtained, as a guarantee of the quality of the production process. This is the result of traceability and mass balance system according to the "National certification scheme for biofuels and bioliquids" certified by Bureau Veritas Italy, a leader in inspection, compliance verification and certification services.

This system guarantees the traceability of the production of the new one Herambiente plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese (BO). The plant was inaugurated last year 25 October and is the first in Italy. It is able to produce biogas from the anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (Forsu) and after an upgrading phase, to obtain biomethane to be used for automotive purposes. Every cubic meter of biomethane has a precise responsibility. A mass balance and traceability system allows you to monitor the quantities of waste entering the plant.

The "National certification scheme for biofuels and bioliquids" is a product certification that guarantees the traceability system: every four months, Bureau Veritas technicians carry out inspections at the production site.

The Sant'Agata Bolognese plant, in addition to producing more than 20 tons of quality compost to be used for agriculture, also produces 7,5 million cubic meters of biomethane per year, a renewable fuel, with benefits on the economy and on the environment, thanks to an annual saving of 6.000 tons of oil and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

“We are particularly proud to have been the first multi-utility in Italy to build a biomethane plant – he declared Andrea Ramonda, CEO of Herambiente-. Thanks to the collaboration with Bureau Veritas we are now able to certify the entire circular process of the biomethane supply chain: from the daily effort of citizens for the correct separate collection of organic waste up to the production and use of a sustainable fuel that can be used in public and private transport of the territory".

“The theme of the cycle management of urban waste – he said Ettore Pollicardo, CEO of Bureau Veritas Italy – is destined to assume explosive importance also and especially for Italy, with the induced effect of accelerating not only the debate, but also the process of searching for concrete and innovative solutions relating to the so-called circular economy. A field in which our group has often performed and continues to perform a pioneering function and which finds tangible proof in the collaborative relationship with Herambiente”.
