Food, health and research: a fruit salad on the motorway instead of snacks with Fondazione Veronesi and Autogrill

Consuming fruit is an important habit for a healthy, varied and balanced diet. Consuming fruit when traveling is a valid and healthy alternative to snacks bought during breaks on the highway. A fruit salad is an excellent solution that combines practicality and taste, especially if you are travelling, fruit is source of simple sugars and provides minerals, vitamins, many useful bioactive molecules such as polyphenols and fiber, which increases the sense of satiety and promotes a healthy microbiota.

From this consideration arises the project carried out by the Umberto Veronesi Foundation in partnership with Autogrill in support of scientific research of excellence. Throughout the month of July, combining profit with the principles of solidarity, «Macedonia for research®» returns to support the work of doctors and researchers who dedicate their lives to scientific research.

An initiative to finance research in the field of nutrigenomics, i.e. the science that studies the relationship between genetic heritage and food

For each 200 gram pack of fruit salad sold, Autogrill will donate part of the proceeds to the Umberto Veronesi Foundation for finance excellent male and female researchers working in the field of nutrigenomics, i.e. the science that studies the relationship between genetic heritage and food; how the molecules we introduce with the diet influence our genes and therefore our health, both positively and negatively. Therefore, nutrigenomics goes hand in hand with prevention, above all of chronic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and above all of tumours, responsible for three quarters of deaths in developed countries.

The goal: to make travelers aware of the importance of a balanced diet for a healthy lifestyle

The initiative born with the aim of making travelers aware of the importance of a balanced diet for a healthy lifestyle allowed in the first edition to finance entirely for the year 2023 the research project of Doctor Rosarita Nasso, committed daily to evaluate the beneficial effects of polyphenols on the processes involved in the progression of gastric cancer.

«For twenty years, the Veronesi Foundation has been involved in financing scientific research of excellence and in disseminating correct lifestyles which also include nutrition, as a weapon of prevention against numerous pathologies. Projects such as «Macedonia for research®» aim to inform and sensitize consumers to make responsible choices in matters of health» – says Monica Ramaioli, Director General of the Umberto Veronesi Foundation.

"Once again this year, together with the Umberto Veronesi Foundation, we have chosen to support scientific research in the nutritional field - comments Luca D'Alba, General Manager of Autogrill Italia - We therefore renew our commitment to further raising awareness among our customers by promoting lifestyles and consumption sustainable and quality products, with the aim of responding in the best possible way to the new needs of a growing range of consumers in search of a healthy and balanced diet».

Marco Bianchi, food mentor and science communicator for the Umberto Veronesi Foundation and testimonial of «Macedonia for research® finally declares himself honored to be alongside such an important project again this year and which I am sure will once again be welcomed and supported by very many people. This glass of fruit not only finances scientific research of excellence, but it is essential to remember the importance of the benefits given by the daily intake of fruit, especially if it's in season"
