Germany in crisis: the three-way coalition agreement is skipped

Negotiations between Cdu, Csu, Greens and liberals to form the new government have failed - Now there are two alternatives: either a minority Merkel government based on the Cdu-Csu alone or a return to elections

Germany in crisis: the three-way coalition agreement is skipped

Chaos in Germany. The negotiating table to form a new government has been cancelled: Cdu, Csu, liberals and greens will not give life to the awaited “Jamaica” coalition, a name given on the basis of the colors of the political forces.

The announcement came from the leader of the Liberals, Christian Lindner: "There is a lack of basic trust" between the parties, he explained, underlining that the Liberals do not want to "leave the voters in the lurch", and that, in this situation, "it is better not to govern”, than to govern badly.

At this point Angela Merkel is facing a crossroads: form a minority government based solely on the alliance between the CDU and CSU, with all that this position of weakness entails, or return to elections. The second option seems increasingly probable and the risk is that the extreme right of Alternative for Germany could emerge further strengthened from the polls.

SECURITY UPDATE TRAINING

The president of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, dismissed the possibility of returning to the polls immediately: "I expect the parties to be open to dialogue to form a government in the near future - he said - All parties are required to serve the country . Anyone who stands in the elections to have political responsibility cannot back down when he has it in his hands. This responsibility cannot simply be deferred to the voters” and the parties will therefore have to “rethink their attitudes”.
