Generali Italia, Sesana: "Health and welfare, we need public-private partnerships"

“The topic of health, especially in recent months, has become very much felt by people. I believe that our healthcare, which is an excellence, needs investment and can be accompanied by an integrated welfare system, aligning the interests of citizens, businesses and the state. And we insurers can play a complementary role to the public system, also in supporting technological innovation in the sector. I therefore believe that at this moment it is necessary to develop a partnership between the public and private sectors". With this proposal he spoke at the event "Ideas for Sustainable Finance", promoted by Fisac Cgil, the managing director of Generali Italia, Marco Sesana.

The manager then specified that for integrated welfare, social security/company welfare, non-self-sufficiency, health/healthcare should be considered: "In particular, on non-self-sufficiency there are great opportunities for public-private collaboration". “There are four areas – continued Sesana – in which, as an insurance sector, we can play an important role, today and for the future: population ageing, macroeconomic and financial instability, digital transformation and cyber security, climate change”. The CEO dwelt on the latter in particular, stating that the fronts to be developed at the same time are the reconversion of companies to an environment-oriented way of working but also prevention, acting on the infrastructural system no longer suitable for the environment in which we live.

It also came from Sesana the proposal for an anti-pandemic fund for emergencies, of which the European insurance companies can be the promoters, also participated by the EU and by the individual Member States: "Faced with emerging risks such as the pandemic risk, which was not in focus by all operators, the Europe could help us by participating in the creation of a fund which would also represent a useful opportunity to rediscover the spirit of the Union”. Generali's CEO, Philippe Donnet, had already intervened on this issue: "Due to their extraordinary nature, the costs associated with pandemic events cannot be covered by the insurance sector alone, and it is therefore essential to devise innovative solutions based on collaboration between the public /private."

“Today – concluded the Italian manager – new consumer expectations emerge who increasingly expect new solutions and coverages from large companies, but also an answer on the social role that these companies play, an active role in the community, in support, for example, of the health system and the economic fabric, thus giving substance to the concept of 'corporate social responsibility. We are convinced that sustainability is the knot that links all the country's recovery projects and in this Generali Italia wants to play an active role. Sustainability for us means doing business well with a positive impact on the real economy, i.e. on people's lives”.
