Photography: a public archive for the enhancement of personal and family heritage

Photography: a public archive for the enhancement of personal and family heritage

With this portal, the ICCD inaugurates a new photography project that complements its institutional mission of conserving and enhancing its photographic collections and managing the General Catalog of Cultural Heritage. In this way, the intention is to pursue that vision of heritage which, alongside the object dimension, also wants to enhance the intangible component of the cultural asset.
A public archive that welcomes personal archives where each memory becomes an additional piece to recompose a broad idea of cultural heritage, as well as testimony to the history of our country: a universe made up of public spaces, squares, museums, works of art, but also moments of social and cultural sharing such as processions, trips out of town, made in Italy, every moment of daily life that has a monument as a backdrop, a glimpse of our cities or landscape.

The collective archive generated by #scenedaunpatrimonio is constantly evolving and invites everyone to try their hand at exploring the meaning of cultural heritage, cyclically launching collection campaigns to which it is possible to contribute with one's photographic resources. The collections tool is used to both share and organize your photos. It is a compass that guides the visitor within the portal in order to facilitate and encourage the reading of the contents and the sharing of one's own images. The division of the collections by theme also makes it possible to grasp different narratives and representations of the Italian cultural heritage.

Carlo Birrozzi, ICCD Director: «I believe in the idea of cultural heritage as a continuous flow to be photographed in its flow; a vital good, an ever-moving tide that we want to make accessible to everyone, welcoming and returning the point of view of each individual who contributes to making it so. #scenedaunpatrimonio is one of the strategic levers on which the Institute has been working tirelessly for months to bring the public institution as close as possible to the local area and people, interacting and restoring value through the medium of photography. The memories and photographs consolidate and complete the collective vision of the Italian cultural heritage in a simple and participatory way».

The first four collections launched on the #scenedaunpatrimonio portal:

REMEMBER
The Bel Paese in the background. Photographing and photographing yourself in front of a monument.
A souvenir is an object that you take home as a souvenir of a trip. Cities of art, museums and monuments used as a background for portraits and self-portraits through private photographs return a personal look at the country's artistic, archaeological and architectural heritage.

DEVOTION
The processions, small and large, historical and modern.
Faith and devotion expressed in the collective rites that cross the big cities and small towns of our country both in the most spectacular and in the most intimate forms.

A SQUARE IN…
What are your favorite squares?
A collection dedicated to squares, from the largest to the smallest, monumental squares, those of historic cafés and markets, post offices and churches; the squares of the cities, those of the villages. Vital centres, meeting places, crossings and stops.

THE COUNTRY IN THE BALL
One ball, 22 players. And outside, all around, the landscape. The football of the minor leagues in the photographs of the teams before the match.
The minor soccer leagues are a fascinating and contradictory world capable of uniting entire communities in the celebration of a secular ritual: the Sunday match.
The group photos of the teams and staff - generally taken on the football field before the match - restore the physiognomies, characters and fashions of a company that changes along with its favorite sport. In the background the landscape which is often the natural continuation of the turf of the playing field.

To contribute to the collections, simply register on the portal and upload your photographs by following the instructions and filling in the required fields.
With this project, ICCD also intends to give new meaning to private and family photographs and recognize their value as a cultural heritage that needs to be organised, managed and protected.
Photography is heritage that tells the heritage. It is a key element that assumes the dual value of documentation and heritage.
