Fiat: too much internal competition, stop the production of the old Panda

To prevent the old, less expensive model from continuing to cannibalize the market for the new one, Fiat would have chosen to cease production of the old Panda - The decision should be announced in the Board meeting on October 30 and will serve to revitalize the Pomigliano plant

Fiat: too much internal competition, stop the production of the old Panda

The new Panda scraps (to use a term in vogue these days) the old Panda. And, as is often the case, it is a matter of internal competition: the old Panda (produced in Poland), in fact, thanks to the lower cost (9.050 euros against 12.450) is cannibalizing the market for the new one (produced in Pomigliano), and Fiat, to remedy this problem, would have decided to discontinue the production of the classic model.

The announcement should arrive on October 30, the day on which the Lingotto board of directors will meet to approve the quarterly report and present the plans for 2013, reviewed through the lens of a crisis that shows no sign of abating.

The move would also serve to revitalize the Pomigliano plant, on which the ax of layoffs has already been struck, while the total absorption of employees remains a road still to be paved. Stopping the production of the Polish Panda, which the unions are already sure of, could be the first brick.

In the early afternoon, within a declining FTSE Mib, the Fiat share lost 2,01% to 4,184 euros per share.
