Facebook, Zuckerberg promises: "We will correct the mistakes"

Mark Zuckerberg announces his New Year's resolutions. And at the top of the list is the idea of correcting Facebook's "too many mistakes" about complying with its policies and preventing misuse of its tools.

“The world feels uneasy and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do, whether it's protecting us from abuse and hate, defending against meddling from certain countries, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent”, writes in a post the co-founder and CEO of the first social media in the world, with over two billion users.

Today, he adds, "many people no longer believe in the idea" that technology can put some power in their hands. On the contrary, he continues, "with the development of a handful of large technology companies, and with governments using technology to police their citizens, many people now believe that technology simply concentrates power" in the hands of someone, instead of decentralize it to the citizens.

Last year, the social network was especially accused of not fighting effectively enough against problematic content, such as hate speech, apology for terrorism or fake news. Or against Russia's political-propaganda uses. Fb has also admitted that its platform can have negative psychological effects on those who abuse it passively.

“My personal challenge for 2018 is to focus on solving these important issues. We will not be able to avoid all mistakes and abuses but we currently make too many mistakes in implementing our policies and in preventing the misuse of our tools”.
