THE NUMBERS THAT MAKE ITALIAN DUBBING AN EXCELLENCE IN THE WORLD

– 570.000 dubbed minutes per year
– 2.100 professionals involved
– 90 million turnover
– 60 million users in Italy
– more than 20 million users worldwide
– 100 dubbing rooms
– 30 dubbing directors

The leitmotif of the conference "Dubbing, an Italian excellence", which took place on November 14, in the Sala Toti of the LUISS University, moderated by the journalist Tonino Manzi, was the safeguarding of quality and copyright. "Dubbing is an excellence, also useful for cultural purposes, it is an honor for us to host today's conference here". This is how Prof. Luca Pirolo, holder of the chair of international economics and marketing, kicked off the debate.

Fortunately, despite the current crisis in other sectors, the audiovisual sector is constantly growing, but it must be protected by rules that establish the minimum requirements below which it must never fall, in order to maintain the Italian standard which makes it a from the
excellence in the world.

Filippo Cellini – INCE Media then took the floor: “This is the conference that marks the conclusion of a series of meetings, within the context of the International Dubbing Grand Prix, which is the most important in Italy, and much coveted. Our intent is to give voice to a category
of "artists" that remained in the shadows for a long time, because the original works should not be distorted. Thanks to dubbing, thousands of films have become accessible to viewers who otherwise would not have seen them in their original language. A few days ago, the Director of Netflix declared on Stampa.it that 84% of the contents viewed in Italy are dubbed. The dubbing business is very strong, its turnover is increasing, perhaps even against the trend, at a time when various sectors are in crisis. There are no public funding, but it is self-sustaining and continues to grow, for this very reason we must continue to guarantee the "professionals" of the sector (voice actors, dubbing directors, adapters) recognition of their professional entity.

INCE Media is the company that organizes the International Dubbing Grand Prix. The final stage will be the Gran Galà delle voci, which will take place on 23 November at 21.00 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, hosted by Pino Insegno and Monica Marangoni, an awards ceremony for the best professionals of the year, in the presence of illustrious guests, the public specialized and non-specialised, industry media and institutions. The jury, which will award the prizes, is made up of all the winners of the past editions. The president of the jury this year will be Paolo Genovese. The public will also have "its winners", in fact it will be possible to vote, through the website of the Grand Prix, www.premiodeldoppiaggio.it, which over the years has become a point of reference on the theme of the "Voice", the Best Dubber and the Best Dubber of the Year.

It was then the turn of Ranieri De Cinque, President of the technical industries section of ANICA: “the market is growing in terms of product needs, currently we are no longer talking only about cinema but about television stations and new platforms (Netflix, Amazon , etc) have a constant need for content. In Italy, these contents are mostly dubbed and the times required are, of course, very different and faster. Furthermore, the 'customers' in the past were Italian, now, also thanks to the new players, we have entered an international logic and this has an impact on the quality that manages to no longer be excellent. Our goal must be precisely to safeguard this quality. Minister Franceschini has focused attention on the centrality of the audiovisual sector and decrees involving the restoration and technical industries of the sector are being approved, to help the sector and make it suitable for all needs. We hope that minimum requirements can be set so as not to make all the work done so far in vain and guarantee not only jobs, but also quality and professionalism."

Andrea Marzulli, Director of the cinema section of the SIAE, recalled the function of the Company he represents: a law establishes the compensation for the success of a work and, every time this is used, the authors, the directors, are paid the "rights ”. In his opinion, it is necessary to promote interest in the "dubbing" category so that legislation on the matter is made and the 1988 decree which establishes the fees can be updated. He also provided some numbers for the voice acting categories:
– 230 adapters deposited 3000 works in 2016
– of these 230, only 24 are under 30 years old
– 25% are screenwriters and directors.
