Unemployment: in February it rose to 10,7%

The Istat data on the unemployed increased slightly compared to the month of January. Young people out of work at 32,8%. Both permanent and fixed-term employees are decreasing. This is a first warning of the slowdown in growth reported by Prometeia and Confindustria

Unemployment: in February it rose to 10,7%

A February the rate of unemployment went back to 10,7% (+0,1%) compared to the previous month. This was revealed by Istat by disclosing the provisional data. The Istat explains that “on an annual basis theemployment grows by 0,5%, equal to +113 thousand units", and that "in the quarter December 2018-February 2019, employment, both overall and by gender, recorded substantial stability compared to the previous three months. In the same period, temporary employees decreased, while a positive signal was recorded for permanent employees".

In "slight" decrease (-0,1%) compared with January (32,9%) rate youth unemployment (15-24 year olds), i.e. the incidence of unemployed young people on the total number of those employed or looking for work, which in February stood at 32,8%. It turns out that the data is almost 14 points higher compared to the pre-crisis low (19,4% in February 2007).

The rate of occupation in February it goes to 58,6% from 58,7% in January (-0,1%). The rate of inactivity remains stable al 34,3%.

“A February 2019 the estimate of employed is slightly down compared to January (-0,1%, equal to -14 thousand units)”, explains the institute. “The trend of employed people is determined by decrease in employees (-44 thousand), both permanent (-33 thousand) and term (-11 thousand), while in the last month they resulted in increase the independents (+30 thousand).

Il decline in employment is concentrated in the class of middle age of 35-49 years old (-74 thousand), while the sign is confirmed good for people over XNUMX (+51 thousand)".
