Diana, the Goddess of hunting at the European courts

In the guise of Diana "Goddess of the hunt" the Olschki publishing house presents a new and fascinating volume entitled "The myth of Diana in the culture of the Courts".

Diana, the Goddess of hunting at the European courts

The book edited by edited by Giovanni Barberi Squarotti, Annarita Colturato, Clara Goria, introduces us to the world of European courtesans, where Diana occupies an important place.

In this narration various episodes of the development of the myth are addressed: from antiquity to the stories of Boccaccio, to the Renaissance reinterpretations; from Parmigianino's frescoes in Fontanellato to Batoni's painting; from mythological disguises and musical compositions for the French court to the poetry of Foscolo and Leopardi. Images, stories, scores, to trace, in the light of different critical gazes, the metamorphoses and ambiguous identities of the goddess that still seduce us today.

Olschki editions

The goddess lives again in the symbolic and allegorical representations of queens, princes and ladies, crosses genres, iconography and styles, plowing through the stages and inspiring works and decorations for residences and gardens in Europe. Under her name, the Venaria Reale rises in the heart of the seventeenth century, "palace of pleasure and hunting" of the circuit of Savoy residences: the Reggia di Diana, according to the iconographic program entirely dedicated to the goddess by Emanuele Tesauro.

Un volume which invites us to reconstruct the meaning of the myth of Diana in an almost fairytale-like and extraordinarily beautiful mythology, history and literature scenario.
