According to a Unioncamere-Symbola report, in 2020 all the other sectors of the cultural industry collapsed, starting with the performing arts and the enhancement of the historical-artistic heritage

In our country, the cultural and creative production system it is worth 84,6 billion euros, which correspond to 5,7% of the Italian added value, and generates a total of 239,8 billion euros. The data, referring to 2020, are contained in the eleventh edition of "I am culture", the annual report of the Symbola foundation and Unioncamere.

The analysis shows that the negative effects of the health crisis have hit the cultural and creative production system with particular force: the wealth produced by the supply chain it decreased by 8,1% against the -7,2% national average.

Also employment it dropped considerably, recording a negative change of 3,5% (-2,1% for the entire Italian economy).

In both cases, the core activities suffered the most, with a contraction which, respectively, amounted to -9,3% and -4,8%.

However, some cultural and creative sectors have shown signs of general stability. The activities they deal with video games and software, while recording a slight reduction in employment (-0,9%), saw the wealth produced increase by 4,2%, also due to the boost to digital and home entertainment that the lockdowns have produced.

On the contrary, the deep crisis of the performing arts (-23,6% in terms of wealth produced and -11,9% in terms of employment) and of valorisation of the historical and artistic heritage (respectively -19,0 and -11,2%), severely affected by the restrictive and containment measures.

In terms of employment, Unioncamere and Symbola point out that today the cultural sector employs more than one and a half million people, equal to 5,9% of total employment.

At the territorial level, the report identifies in Milano the capital of Italian culture. The large metropolitan area of ​​the Lombard capital is in first place in the provincial rankings for the incidence of wealth and employment produced, with 9,7 and 9,8%. Roma it is second for added value (8,7%) and fourth for employment (7,8%) while Torino it ranks third (8,4%). They follow for added value Arezzo (7,6%), Trieste (7,1%), Florence (6,7%), Bologna (6,2%) and Padova (6,1%).
