Cottarelli in the balance: everything postponed until tomorrow, a closer vote

Coup de scene at the Quirinale. While all of Italy awaited the dissolution of the reserve and the presentation of the ministers of the new Cottarelli government, something seems to have gone wrong. All updated as of tomorrow morning.

The unexpected news rekindles tension on the markets, with the spread returning above 300 points again.

Carlo Cottarelli left the Colle without making any statements after the conversation with the President of the Republic Mattarella. There list of ministers who will make up the neutral Executive desired by the Head of State is therefore not yet ready, despite the Premier's promise "to act quickly, quickly, quickly".

If until yesterday the concern was not to let the Italians perceive that they have a list ready in the drawer waiting for the bankruptcy of the Lega and the 5 Star Movement, today the fears are overturned: the road to the formation of the council of ministers could be complicated.

"Carlo Cottarelli simply needs more time to delve into some nodes related to the list and no one has spoken of giving up the job". Ansa reports it, citing sources from the Quirinale.

“We are investigating some issues on the list of ministers, but it won't take long” said Cottarelli himself as he entered the Chamber.

Despite the declarations, however, all the options seem to have suddenly reopened, including that of a renunciation by Cottarelli given the request for such close elections. In this case one could make yet another attempt with another figure chosen by the President, probably in the center-right area, or proceed directly with the dissolution of the Chambers which will lead to the vote, keeping Paolo Gentiloni at Palazzo Chigi for the handling of current affairs and the election management.

In fact, they follow each other the hypotheses on the date of the return to the polls. The Democratic Party has decided to relaunch, proposing to call elections for the end of July or the first week of August. If the first date seems improbable, given that according to the provisions of the law, 60 days must elapse from the dissolution of the Chambers, the second could instead be legitimate, even if unusual.

Vote as soon as possible also for the 5 Star Movement. “The M5s – says the M5s group leader in the Chamber – does not give up, do not be fooled. Indeed, you are strengthening us more every day. We have to go back to voting, we must do it as soon as possible. And we must finally, after what happened, mark the redemption of millions and millions of Italians ".
