South Korea is "colored" to attract tourists

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of the South Korea decided to assign different colors to apartments and government buildings present in ten cities of the country in order to give them a "regional" connotation that can attract tourists. The decision aims to give a local "colour" to hitherto anonymous cities.

The model used is that of the island of Santorini in Greece, whose colors – white for the houses and blue for the doors and windows – have contributed to its international success. Another model is the red roofs of the German city of Heidelberg. The ministry suggested eight roof colors and 12 wall colors to each city and left it up to the local administration to choose the final shades. Gwangju and South Jeolla province, a model for green energy, chose yellow hues, while Gimcheon in North Gyeongsang province adopted blue and gold to celebrate water and rivers. Finally Jeju, center of international exchanges, preferred black and white. "Choosing a color that reveals the characteristics of the city - said a ministerial official - will add charm and promote tourism".
