This is certified by Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, according to which also in the industrial sector there was an increase of 5% compared to February 2021 "thanks to the substantial recovery of the main sectors monitored", comments the company led by Stefano Donnarumma .

Electricity consumption in February 2022

Going forward with the data, in the first two months of the current year the national requirement is up by 2,1% compared to the January-February period of 2021 (+1,7% the adjusted value).

February 2022, with the same number of working days as in the same month of 2021 and an average temperature 0,5°C lower, recorded an increase in electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and corrected for calendar and temperature effects, of 2,4% .

Territorially, the greatest increase occurred in the North (+2,9%), followed by the South and Islands (+2,8%) and Center (+2,3%).

“In economic terms, the value of electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the effects of the calendar and temperature, increased by 0,8% compared to January of this year”, Terna reports.

National production at 86%, renewables are growing

In February 2022, 86% of Italian electricity demand was met with domestic production and the remaining 14% with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production amounted to 22,2 billion kWh (+7,5%). Renewables covered 29% of electricity demand. Wind (+32,8%), thermal (+19%), photovoltaic (+16,6%) and geothermal (+1,9%) sources of production are also on the rise, while a sharp decline for hydroelectric (-51,3 .50%) "due to the low rainfall that characterized the period and which also entails a level of filling of the reservoirs close to the minimum values recorded in the last XNUMX years", underlines Terna.

As regards the import-export balance, the change is equal to -19,8% due to a combined effect of an increase in exports (+99%) and a decrease in imports (-14,8%), a phenomenon already found in the previous three months.

The demand from industrialists is growing

According to the IMCEI index, which takes into consideration the industrial consumption of so-called 'energy-intensive' companies, after the decline recorded in January, in February 2022 the electricity consumption of energy-intensive companies rose by 5% compared to the same month in 2021 and by 2,8% compared to January 2022 (data seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the calendar effect). The results of all the main sectors were positive, with the exception of the sectors of means of transport and non-ferrous metals.
