Consob, the value of Piazza Affari drops to 21% of GDP

In the first six months of 2012 the value of companies listed on the Milan Stock Exchange fell to 21% of GDP, equal to 327,1 billion euros. This is the lowest share for two and a half years, as reported by the Consob in its latest statistical bulletin. However, the numbers refer to a stock market phase that now appears to be outdated, considering the important news of recent weeks (the ECB's anti-spread shield, the go-ahead to the ESM state-saving fund and liquidity measures from the Fed) that fueled the recent riding of stock lists.

But the negative performance of the first half still weighs – and not a little – on listed companies. According to Commission data, only financial companies they burned over half of their value in Piazza Affari in 30 months.

Il industrial sector remained essentially stable: it had a total capitalization of 177,8 billion euro at the end of 2010 and stopped at 159,8 billion in the second quarter of 2012. For banks and insurance companies, however, the collapse was vertical: capitalization more than halved, going from 166,8 billion at the beginning of 2010 to 81,7 in the first half of this year.
