Connectivity, Italy in 17th place in Europe

Despite the efforts made in recent years in the diffusion of ultra-fast fiber, Italy is still in 17th place in Europe for connectivity. This is what emerges from the Desi 2020 Index, the tool through which the European Commission measures the digital progress of the Member States since 2014.

This result will be an additional stimulus for Infratel and Open Fiber to accelerate the implementation of the plan for ultra-fast fiber and perhaps for Tim and Open Fiber to seek new forms of collaboration.

The news that Open Fiber, controlled by Cdp and Enel, brought was yesterday the ultra-fast fiber in Tremestieri Etneo, Sicilian municipality, in the province of Catania, included in the white areas and located at the foot of the volcano.

Testing of the infrastructure has been completed, which already allows citizens and businesses to surf the Internet by exploiting the potential of ultra-broadband. The works were conducted by Open Fiber using regional and state funds. The activities were coordinated by Infratel, an "in house" company of the Ministry of Economic Development, with the supervision of the Sicilian Region. Altogether they have been wired 2739 real estate units, homes and commercial activities, who will be able to surf the web at a speed of 1 Gigabit per second. In addition to private houses and manufacturing plants, the optical fiber was laid inside 8 public buildings: the "Settebello Sud" kindergarten in via Monti Iblei, the "Settebello Nord" and "Settebello Sud" primary schools in Largo Pitagora, the "Raffaello Sanzio" secondary school in via San Gaspare Bertoni, the municipal delegation still in via San Gaspare Bertoni, the "Don Bosco" campus in Largo Pitagora-via Mediterraneo, the Provincial Police Headquarters and the local provincial unit in via Nuovaluce. To date in Sicily the BUL Plan (Ultra Broadband) sees construction sites open in 197 municipalities, 93 of which have already been completed and with the network already active and available to users in 48 centres.
