Confitarma, d'Amico launches the 5 challenges of young shipowners

“We young shipowners must be at the forefront to contribute to the revitalization of the Italian maritime sector, continuing our institutional commitment within Confitarma”, the association of Italian shipowners which is a member of Confindustria. This is what the new president of Confitarma's young shipowners, Salvatore d'Amico, claimed when he opened the assembly of the Youth Group in Rome and illustrated his program for the three-year period 2021-3.

The platform on which the young shipowners will move is made up of five cornerstones that d'Amico recalled and analyzed point by point: 1) the health and safety of the crews especially after the storm of the pandemic; 2) the training of seafarers; 3) the decarbonisation of shipping; 4) the competitiveness of the flag; 5) the strengthening of relations with the other young groups of the maritime cluster.

“We are young and have a lot to learn from the experience of our fathers and our colleagues in the company – added d'Amico – but we want and can bring our contribution of ideas to the Italian Confederation of Shipowners”.

Focusing on the priority of priorities - that is, the health of the crews - "it is important - underlined the new President of the Youth of Confitarma - that all workers of the sea are vaccinated, to allow them to travel all over the world to embark and disembark from ships avoiding physical and psychological stress”, planning crew rotation. Dialogue with all the institutions was also hoped for to strengthen the training of seafarers with an eye to the development of Higher Technical Institutes which is finally in the Government's programme. The commitment to the decarbonisation of shipping is also strong.

The challenges launched by d'Amico are not simple, but he said he is very confident about the quality of the team he has been called to lead for the current three-year period.
