EU Commission is still pressing for Eurobonds

On with the stability bonds. The European Commission is once again asking for the establishment of Community bonds, and it does so on the eve of the informal meeting of the European Council scheduled for Wednesday. "They would be a very important asset for us and we consider it one of our crisis response tools," said Amadeu Altafaj, spokesman for the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn.

The subject could probably be discussed during the dinner between heads of state and government on Wednesday. "It is up to the Council to draw up the agenda, but Rehn reiterated the importance of the Stability bonds last Friday in Oxford", Altafaj limits himself to underlining, who recalls the need, for the EU Commission, for "greater integration of the monetary union". In this perspective, continues Rehn's spokesman, "it would make sense to generate greater liquidity through greater stability in the bond market".

The message to the leaders of all Europe was therefore launched. Ultimately it will be up to them to decide on Eurobonds. Because, as Altafaj points out, "they are part of our crisis response strategy, but there is a political decision to be made". And Wednesday's dinner in this sense could be of help.
