Hollywood's summer season will close with the next long holiday weekend (Labord Day is celebrated on Monday in the US) and the balance will be negative. The number of tickets sold at the box office between the US and Canada will likely drop to a 25-year low.

The news was reported by the Los Angeles Times, citing estimates by comScore, according to which revenues generated at the box office between the first weekend of May and Labor Day will be equal to 3,78 billion dollars. The result would be down by 16% compared to the same period in 2016, worse than the 10% decline estimated by various film studios before the start of the summer.

The number of tickets sold in the key period - during which 40% of total sales arrive - should be equal to 425 million, the lowest since 1992. The reason? Explanations range from uninteresting movies to increased ticket costs, not to mention competition from video streaming services such as those provided by Netflix and Amazon.

Also for this reason, despite the opposition of the cinema chains, the film studios try to adapt to make their films available for streaming after they arrive in theaters.
