The great cold between China and the US after the Snowden affair and the disagreements on Syria is pushing Russia-China rapprochement. The ties between the two giants of the Asian area become closer, cooperation relationships are strengthened and the bilateral agreement, in view of the challenges of the G20, becomes more solid. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Thursday 5 September, shortly before attending the inaugural meeting of the G20 group together.
On the agenda is precisely that cooperation between the two countries, that mutual support which has been intensifying in recent times. If Xi said he was happy with the great efforts made to bring the many cooperation projects to a successful conclusion and expressed the hope that the collaboration process could accelerate in strategic fields such as energy or military, Putin, for his part, declared satisfied with the rapid growth of Russia-China relations and called for an intensification of these relations not only in the energy and military fields, but also in the economic, industrial and high-tech fields.
Looking at the complicated international situation, then, the two leaders agreed to strengthen coordination in macroeconomic matters, to fight commercial and financial protectionism, and to safeguard the interests of emerging markets. To achieve these results, Putin has set as an essential condition that the two countries are aligned within the G20; the Russian president also hoped that in the near future the other BRICS states (Brazil, India and South Africa) would join China and Russia, creating an area of intense collaboration. The immediate result of the meeting was the signing of a series of Russia-China cooperation agreements in various fields.
