The Palazzo della Regione in Mantua dominates Piazza delle Erbe and is one of the oldest places in the city, dating back to 1251. Precisely on the occasion of the exhibition on the artist Marc Chagall entitled “Marc Chagall as in painting, so in poetry” has reopened its doors after the years of restoration following the 2012 earthquake.
The exhibition is curated by Gabriella Di Milia and organized in collaboration with the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The exhibition presents over 130 works including the complete cycle of 7 canvases painted by Chagall in 1920 for the Jewish Chamber Theater in Moscow: extraordinary works that represent the most revolutionary and least nostalgic moment of his artistic career.
The teleri constitute a on loan from the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, of very rare presence in Italy: they were exhibited in Milan in 1994 and in Rome in 1999 after the exhibitions of 1992 at the Guggenheim in New York and in 1993 at The Art Institute of Chicago.
The exhibition project will propose the reconstruction of the context of the Jewish chamber theatre, that is a "box" of about 40 square meters of surface, for which Chagall had created, in addition to the wall paintings, the decorations for the ceiling, the curtain, together with costumes and sets for three theatrical works
A selection of emblematic works both paintings and watercolors by Marc Chagall from the years 1911 - 1918 will accompany the immersive staging of the Jewish Chamber Theater, together with a series of etchings, executed between 1923 and 1939, including the illustrations for the " Gogol's Dead Souls”, for La Fontaine's Fables and for the Bible. Among the selected works are “Above the city” of the years 1914/1918, “View from the window” of about 1915 and “The musicians” of about 1911.
The peculiarity of the exhibition on Chagall inside the Palazzo della Regione in Mantua lies in the possibility for the visitor to relate and allow yourself to be crossed by similarities and differences between the production of the Belarusian artist and the works of many artists of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
