Car sharing: Italy queen of Europe, but watch out for car liability

When it comes to cars, Italians like to share. Either because of the higher car liability rates than elsewhere, or because public transport is problematic in many cities, our country occupies a leading position in the European panorama of car sharing. According to the 2017 edition of the Auto Observatory of Aiba (Italian association of insurance and reinsurance brokers), the sector already has 5 cars throughout Italy, with over 4 million bookings.

The European capital of car sharing is Milano, which boasts a fleet of 1.900 vehicles, 323 registered users and approximately 6 million kilometers travelled, with an average of over 2 users per day. In the Italian classification, the silver medal goes to Roma while the third step of the podium is occupied by Torino. They close the Top-5 Verona e Bari.

The diffusion of car sharing in the main Italian cities is clearly higher than that recorded in the large European capitals.

However, there is one aspect that few people think about: what happens to those who have a car sharing accident? Do all companies provide the same insurance coverage? The answer is no. "Users of the service are scarcely aware of the risks to which they are exposed - observes Luca Franzi de Luca, president of Aiba - and companies in the sector would need more clarity in informing the degree of protection of users, in the light of the large differences in terms of insurance coverage provided by different companies, which certainly impact on the costs of the service”.
