Buitoni: from 2022 the brand no longer exists

The brand Buitoni, born in the province of Arezzo in 1827, ceases to exist. The reason? The concession contract between the Swiss giant has not been renewed Nestlé, owner of the logo, and the group Newlat Food Spa, a company that also manages the Delverde, Polenghi and Giglio brands and which in 2008 acquired the Arezzo pasta factory. The factory will continue to produce, but only with logos other than Buitoni, such as Delverde. The brand therefore remains the property of Nestlé, which undertakes not to sell it for eighteen months.

The decision not to renew the contract with Nestlé was made by Newlat Food Spa, which paid for the rights to the Buitoni brand a very high price: 1,7 million euros per year, equal to an investment of more than 22 million euros since 2008.

When it was listed on Piazza Affari in 2019, Newlat announced its intention to give up the Buitoni brand, which has so far guaranteed the group 16% of the turnover. Already in the documentation for the IPO, the company declared that it did not want to renew the contract with Nestlé, which therefore expired (31 December 2020 for non-EU countries and 31 December 2021 for EU countries).

In the last two years, Newlat's management has spoken several times about the possibility of buying the Buitoni brand (a hypothesis also supported by local politics, to avoid employment repercussions). In the end, however, they simply chose to move on.

SECURITY UPDATE TRAINING

“The news of the end of the Buitoni brand spread today by some press organs is completely groundless”. This can be read in a note from Nestlé Italiana which states that "Buitoni operates and will continue to operate in Italy and abroad with its historic and iconic Made in Italy products".

According to some press reports, from 2022 January XNUMX the Buitoni factory, while remaining open, will only be able to produce with other brands. Nestlè denies the news.
