Bucharest: the government falls over the controversy over the burning in the disco

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta resigns from his post and with him the entire government of Bucharest. The premier's resignation comes following the strong controversy sparked by the fire in a disco which led to the death of 32 young people. Following the incident, 20 people demonstrated against the Bucharest executive, accusing the authorities of not carrying out the necessary checks on safety standards in public places. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta, the Minister of the Interior, Gabriel Opres, and the president of the district where the club is located.

The incident occurred in Bucharest on the night of October 30 in the Collectiv club. A fireworks display caused a fire inside the venue which cost the lives of 32 young people and injured over 180. In a few minutes the fire caused an inferno with the approximately 400 young people present who desperately tried to save themselves through the only available exit route.

The three owners of the nightclub were immediately subjected to a 24-hour arrest on charges of voluntary homicide. On Monday, the arrest of one of the three was announced, for manslaughter, for failing to guarantee the necessary security measures. Tuesday was the day of the demonstration of over 20 people who convinced the government to resign.
