Stock market 2023: Unicredit queen of the Ftse Mib, record-breaking banks, Leonardo flies. Little Redelfi scores +680%

After a fight at the last exchange, Leonardo wins the scepter of the best Ftse Mib stock with an increase of more than 85% - Record performance for the banks, Stellantis in third place - Here is the ranking of the best and worst

It was a fight to the last exchange that recalled the best MotoGP races and the historic sprints of Coppi and Bartali. But at the sound of the bell that decreed the closing of the last session of 2023, those in Piazza Affari will struggle to forget the scepter of queen action of the Ftse Mib he challenged it Unicredit, followed a few tenths of a point behind Leonardo. +84,98 percent for the banking stock, +84,77 percent for the Defense stock. Performances almost three times greater than those achieved by the basket of Italian big caps (Ftse Mib +27,7%) and among the best of the Eurostoxx 600. 

The bronze medal went to stellantis, which closed the year with an increase of 58,88% thanks to the recovery of the automotive market. 

Stock market 2023: it is the year of the banks, Unicredit is the best

2023 was the year of the banks which, driven by the ECB's rate increases and the consequent surge in interest margins, achieved record performances throughout Europe. The Ftse Italia Banks it closed the year with an increase of more than 42%, with all the big names in the sector recording double-digit increases. It is no coincidence that 10 banking stocks appear in the Top 5 of the FtseMib. 

In first place, as mentioned, there is Unicredit, whose shares reached 24,565 euros, at an 11-year high. The title of the bank in Piazza Gae Aulenti is also the most traded of the year, with a value of 74 billion euros with almost 5 million contracts. Investors placed total trust in the strategy of CEO Andrea Orcel, who not only revised the structures in Germany and Eastern Europe, but above all brought strong growth in profits (6,7 billion in the 9 months) and a generous policy of shareholder remuneration.

Fourth place in the general Top10 for Bper. The rumors about the possible marriage with Monte dei Paschi have put a damper on the stock, which has grown by 57,15% since the beginning of the year to 3,026 euros.

In fifth place in the ranking of the best Ftse Mib stocks we find another great protagonist of 2023: Monte dei Paschi which during the year marked an increase of 56,77% above 3 euros per share. A performance that was unthinkable until recently. Yet the care implemented by administrator Andrea Lovaglio worked, with the Sienese institute closing the January-September period of 2023 with a net profit of 928,6 million euros, compared to the red of 334,4 million of the first three quarters of 2022. In the 3rd quarter alone the net profit was 310 million euros. Results which allowed the State to begin the long-awaited exit from Monte dei Paschi, selling a 20% stake for 25 million euros last November 920th. Without to forget, the acquittal on appeal of the Profumo-Viola duo, which allowed the bank to reduce the provisions previously foreseen to meet damage claims. 

Fifth place in the rankings. The top 10 closes Bpm bank with an increase of 43,26%. 

In this context it is also necessary to remember the performance of Intesa Sanpaolo which, thanks to the very solid results obtained during the year, achieved growth of +26,71%.

Stock Exchange 2023: Leonardo flies to the Ftse Mib

The 2023 for Leonardo It was a stock market year worth remembering. Thanks to strong corporate growth, but also to international geopolitical and military tensions (from Ukraine to the Middle East), the stock of the group led by former minister Roberto Cingolani achieved growth close to 85%, reaching seven-year highs.

In third place in the overall Ftse Mib ranking is stellantis, which gained 58,88% of its value during the year to 21,15 euros per share. 2023 has been a brilliant year for auto stocks Ferrari in sixth place (+51,78%), Iveco eighth (+46,54%). 

The top ten of the big cap index closes A2A (seventh, +47,81%) ed stm with its +36,69%.

Stock market 2023: the worst stocks of the Ftse Mib 

From the best to the worst. There are only five stocks that ended 2023 in the red, two of which with fractional declines.

The prize for worst Ftse Mib title goes to Diasorin which during the year lost 28,89% of its value to 93,24 euros per share. The shares are moving further and further away from the glories of the hardest period of the Covid emergency, when the sale of diagnostic tests took them above 200 euros. In fact, from September 2021 to today, their value has more than halved, reaching pre-pandemic levels. A trend common to many stocks in the pharmaceutical sector that are putting the pandemic bubble behind them, seeking new sources of income capable of replacing tests, vaccines and drugs linked to Covid.   

Negative sign in 2023 also for FinecoBank, which closed the year with a decline of 12,66%. On the third step of the podium in the ranking of the worst Ftse Mib stocks is Tenaris (-3,6%), followed by Italgas (-0,95%) ed Erg (+ 1,08%).

Stock market 2023, record percentages for smaller stocks: Redelfi +680% 

Broadening the horizon to all the stocks listed on the Italian Stock Exchange we find increases even higher than those achieved by the big names of the Ftse Mib. Stocks so small and volatile that they even recorded triple-digit performances. Any examples? Redelfi, management company with focus on energy transition and listed on Euronext Growth Milan, has gained 680% since the beginning of the year at 8,26 euros per share. They follow Global Coinbase (+ 399,27%) and Visibilia Publisher (+269%), controlled by Visibilia, a company founded by Minister Daniela Santanché who on 28 December filed the request to open the negotiated settlement for the solution to the business crisis.  

Triple-digit performance also for Altea Green Power (+ 229%), PowerSoft (+ 129,85%) and Italy Independent (+ 123,23%).
