Opens the 55th Venice International Art Exhibition which bears the title of "Encyclopedic Palace“, edited by edited by Massimiliano Gioni and organized by Venice Biennale chaired by Paul Baratta.

The exhibition is supported by 88 Pnational participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and in the historic center of Venice. There are 10 countries present for the first time: Angola, Bahamas, Kingdom of Bahrain, Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, Republic of Kosovo, Kuwait, Maldives, Paraguay and Tuvalu.

An absolute novelty is also the participation of the Holy See with an exhibition set up in the Sale d'Armi. In Principio is the title chosen by Card. Gianfranco Ravasi (President of the Pontifical Council for Culture) for the Pavilion curated by Antonio Paolucci (Director of the Vatican Museums).
Both the Holy See and Argentina, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates will be hosted in the new pavilions restored by the Biennale in the Sale d'Armi at the Arsenale.
Il Italy Pavilion in the Arsenale, organized by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities with the PaBAAC – Directorate General for the landscape, fine arts, architecture and contemporary art – is curated this year by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi with an exhibition entitled “ vice versa".
There are 47 children Collateral Events admitted by the curator and promoted by national and international non-profit bodies and institutions, located in numerous locations in the city of Venice. 
Thanks to an agreement between the Venice Biennale and the Teatro la Fenice, the Madama Butterfly Special Project has been made possible. The design of the sets and costumes are entrusted to the Japanese artist Mariko Mori, the direction to the Spanish Àlex Rigola who has been director of the Biennale Teatro since 2010 (Teatro la Fenice 21 > 30 June and 12 > 31 October 2013).

Il Meeting Calendar on Art, instead includes a series of conversations, stories and meetings with Marco Paolini and four other appointments on the myth of the self-taught artist.
