Barroso-Van Rompuy: Italy has asked for monitoring by the IMF and the EU

Crime solved in Cannes: the two presidents of the European Commission and Council revealed that it was our country that asked international institutions to supervise the implementation of reforms.

Barroso-Van Rompuy: Italy has asked for monitoring by the IMF and the EU

Confirmation came directly from Jose Manuel Barroso: “Italy – revealed the president of the European Commission from Cannes, where the G20 is underway – decided on its own initiative to ask the International Monetary Fund to monitor its fiscal and economic reform efforts“. This resolves a detective story that held court in Cannes for several hours, amidst press leaks and rumors from officials. According to Barroso, our country has taken an “important step. In the coming weeks, we will monitor Italy's situation and its ability to meet its commitments. It is important for all EU member countries”.

The Portuguese then specified that next week he himself will come to Italy for this purpose, together with some representatives of the International Monetary Fund. Words that sound at least unexpected, considering the numerous doubts that have arisen in the Italian delegation regarding the opportunity to accept what in the eyes of the world appears as a sort of commissioner.

Yet even the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, confirmed that in reality the request for such treatment came directly from our country: “Italy – underlined the Belgian – invited the IMF to verify every quarter, in liaison with Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti, the implementation of the measures. But, above all, it has given the EU a mission to verify the measures in detail and to supervise the implementation of these measures. All of this is extremely important for the credibility of the announced measures”.
