Bansky, work reduced to tatters at Sotheby's auction: was it the artist?

Here the work Girl with Ballon (iconic little girl with a red balloon painted on a mural in London in 2002) by the mysterious artist Banksy comes out of its tattered frame, a bit like a sheet inside the office paper shredder device. It had just been auctioned for £953 plus auction fees.

Bansky, work reduced to tatters at Sotheby's auction: was it the artist?

It was the last work in the catalog of the Contemporary Art evening sale of Sotheby's, held in London and up to that moment everything was proceeding according to forecasts, but suddenly an alarm goes off in the room and many think it was the fire alarm, instead it was a real twist.

And while the auctioneer and his assistants observe the scene apparently surprised: a man with a beret tries to leave but is stopped by the Sotheby's security personnel. One wonders if it wasn't really the artist who has never been seen to date, nor is his true identity known. Will it be him? Since he seems to have immediately claimed this amazing performance on his Instagram profile of him. After all, it is known, the artist has always been against the commercialization of his works, in fact he prefers to place them on the walls as real social messages.

One wonders, however, how they failed to notice the mechanism inserted in the painting which, with the sound of the beater's hammer, triggered the destruction of the work, placed very close by.

But it must also be said that from one complete work there are now many more to compose the original. We'll see if there will be even more collectors to settle for just one strip.

However, the performance is worthy of the uniqueness enjoyed by the English artist and writer, considered one of the greatest exponents of street art.
