Bank of Italy: record debt breaks through 1900 billion

It is not the kind of news that one expects lightly in the midst of a debt crisis that is spreading to the two peninsulas of the Mediterranean, with markets rocked by high volatility and a global economic slowdown. But the numbers speak for themselves and the statistical bulletin of the Bank of Italy recorded that in May the Italian public debt exceeded the threshold of 1900 billion.

Debt stands at 1.901.919 billion euros, an increase of 0,23% compared to 1.897.565 billion in May 2010.

The spread between the BTPs and the German Bund, however, is, at 11.30, at 268 basis points, far from the record of 415 basis points recorded on August 5th. The announcement by the European Central Bank to buy Italian and Spanish government bonds to restore confidence in the markets helped.
