Veneto banks: the commission of inquiry starts from there

From the most recent events to those that occurred previously, following a chronological path that will reach the four banks placed under resolution by the Government in November 2015, namely Banca Etruria, Banca Marche, Carichieti and Carife, three of which have now partially (the good one) under the aegis of Ubi Banca - After the Venetian banks it will be the turn of Mps - Greco's hearing on Wednesday

Reverse history. The commission of inquiry into the banks led by Pierferdinando Casini drew up the investigation road map. "It seems reasonable to start from the hearings on the closest interventions that the pro-tempore governments have implemented and then go back to the more distant ones", reads the president's report.

We will start with the crisis of the Veneto banks and then proceed backwards. From the most recent events to those that occurred previously, following a chronological path that will reach the four banks placed under resolution by the Government in November 2015, namely Banca Etruria, Banca Marche, Carichieti and Carife, three of which have now partially (the good one) under the aegis of Ubi Banca.

Why do we start from the end? One of the reasons is time: the commission of inquiry will end its mandate at the end of the current legislature, therefore, starting from Popolare di Vicenza and Veneto Banca, the aim is to avoid a political use of its powers.

The first dossier to be tackled will be the one relating to the rescue of the Veneto banks, then it will be the turn of Monte dei Paschi. The aim is to explore the most important issues and identify the responsibilities of the managers involved, also with an eye to their salaries given that, as Casini himself explained: "sometimes the salary standards in question were not in line with the difficult situation of individual banks".

Casini specified that the works will take place in a synchronous manner, listening at the same time to government officials and the heads of the supervisory authorities.

The next auditions of the commission have been set for next week: Tuesday 17 October and Wednesday 18. Two magistrates will also be heard during the meetings: the deputy prosecutor of the Cassation, Luigi Orsi, and the prosecutor of Milan, Francesco Greco. Then, according to the plans, it will also be the turn of the Minister of the Economy, Pier Carlo Padoan.
