Banks: there is tension between Abi and Bankitalia on the governance of Popolari

Tensions rise between the ABI and the Bank of Italy on the reform of the governance of cooperative banks.
The clash concerns in particular the crucial question of the per capita vote and the possibility that it can be tempered by a better collection of proxies in the shareholders' meetings in order to make shareholders with a greater number of shares weigh more, without distorting the nature of the bank popular.

The controversy over the consultation document surfaced during today's Abi summit meeting.

As regards the governance of the Popolari, “there is a problem” admits Flavio Trinca, president of Veneto Banca. But he adds: "We don't understand why there is such a rigid attitude, especially from the governor but also from his collaborators".

In conclusion, a banker explains: "It's not just the Popolari who are angry, but also the Savings Banks who want to reduce the president of the bank to an usher".
In reality, the reorganization of the Popolari, which has a solid lobby in Parliament has been dragging on for many years and it is not surprising that the Popolari are trying to take refuge in defending the status quo precisely at a time when the central bank wants to break the delay and finally arrive at a structure more suited to institutions that have freely chosen to turn to the capital market either through listing on the Stock Exchange or through the issue of bonds.
