Company Description

Snam SpA is an Italian energy infrastructure company active in the transport, storage and regasification of methane.

Snam operates through controlling interests (Snam Rete Gas and Infrastrutture Trasporto Gas, Stogit and LNG Italia), focused on the management and development of the following regulated businesses: transportation and dispatching, storage and regasification of natural gas. Snam is also active in biomethane, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency and hydrogen. It also operates abroad (Albania, Austria, France, UK) through its other subsidiaries.

Snam's headquarters are in San Donato Milanese.

Economic and financial analysis of the company

Snam (acronym for National Pipeline Company) was born on 30 October 1941 with the aim of building methane pipelines and distributing and selling gas.

In 1955 the Snam Montaggi which later became Saipen after the incorporation of SAIP.

In 1956 the Snam projects for the design of large plants on land (Onshore).

In 2001, with the liberalization of the gas market, Snam spun off the activities related to gas transport from the company and was born Snam Rete Gas.

On 6 December 2001 it entered the Stock Exchange.

In February 2009 Snam Rete Gas SpA acquired from from ENI SpA 100% of Italgas SpA for 3,07 billion euros, and 100% of Stoccaggi Gas Italia SpA., for 1,65 billion.

From 1 January 2012, the name change from Snam Rete Gas to Snam SpA transferring the transportation business to the new wholly owned company Snam Rete Gas SpA. The logo is also changed.

In November 2016, the demerger with Italgas took place with the transfer of the 86.5% stake held in Italgas Reti SpA to its shareholders, Italgas SpA. The latter thus returned to being listed on the stock exchange after 13 years.

Snam is among the shareholders of TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) and of ADNOC Gas Pipelines, company that holds the rights to manage 20 pipelines in the United Arab Emirates for 38 years.

  • Snam Rete Gas SpA designs, builds and manages gas transport infrastructure
  • Gnl Italia SpA, the main liquefied natural gas regasification operator in Italy
  • STOGIT SpA deals with the storage of natural gas

  • Snam 4 Environment specialized in the development of biomethane infrastructures: controls Renerwaste (83%), IES Biogas (70%), and Enersi Sicilia (100%);
  • TEP Energy Solution, an Italian company active in the energy efficiency sector: Snam owns 82%.
  • Italgas – 13%
  • Industrie De Nora – 33% Italian company active in alkaline electrodes, essential components for the production of alkaline electrolysers
  • ITM Power – English company

Abroad, it operates through investee companies in Albania (AGSCo), Austria (TAG and GCA), France (Terega), Greece (DESFA) and the United Kingdom (Interconnector UK).
