Coca-Cola was invented by the pharmacist John Stith Pemberton, in 1886, when a Prohibition law was imposed in Atlanta. Pemberton thus began to develop a soft drink initially as a remedy for headaches and fatigue.

The name Coca-Cola was conceived by a partner of Pemberton, frank mason robinson, from the combination of the two main ingredients: the coca leaves from South America and the flavoring cola nuts, sources of caffeine. Pemberton first advertised the drink on May 29, 1884 in the local newspaper.

In 1887 Pemberton sold the rights to his company to Asa Griggs Candler who incorporated it in 1888 into the Coca-Cola Corporation.
