Company Description

Assicurazioni Generali (commonly known as the Generali Group) is an Italian insurance company. The company was founded on 26 December 1831 in Trieste where the headquarters are located. The direction for Italy is located in Mogliano Veneto.
Generali Group is present in 50 countries. It operates mainly in Europe and has an important presence in Asia and Latin America. The group has more than 72 employees and almost 70 million customers.

Currently at the head of the company there are Gabriele Galateri of Genola (as chairman since April 2011), Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone (Deputy Vice President) e Philippe Donnet (CEOs).

Generali are the largest Italian insurance company, third in Europe for turnover after Allianz ed AXIS. The group is one of the leading companies in Europe and one of the largest global groups in the insurance and asset management sector.

The parent company is Generali Italy which was born in 2013 from merger by incorporation of the Italian branch of Assicurazioni Generali into INA Assitalia.

Generali operates in all forms of insurance: life and non-life, non-life and also operate as a reinsurance company. The largest revenues come from the life insurance sector (67,1%). It also has asset management, real estate and brokerage activities General Bank works in the banking sector.

Economic and financial analysis of the company

Assicurazioni Generali Italian company insurance was established in 1831 in Trieste, during the Habsburg Empire, on the initiative of a group of traders from Trieste and Venice. Full name was Imperial Royal Privileged Generali Austro Insurance Company-Italians. The promoter of the initiative was the entrepreneur Giuseppe Lazzaro Morpurgo. The adjective “Generali” indicated the fact that the company dealt with every insurance branch: maritime, fire, life, hail. The initial share capital was two million guilders, spread over a large shareholding.

In the first years of life, it extended its activities in all Austrian territories and in the main European countries and ports. Between 1831 and 1837 he opened his branches in France, Germany and Spain. The three countries are still among the main European markets today.

In 1848, following the anti-Austrian uprisings, the adjective "Austro-Italic" was eliminated from the name and the company assumed the name Assicurazioni Generali.

It was created in 1851 Geneagricola, the Group's agri-food holding which operates in various agricultural sectors. It is the largest Italian agri-food company in terms of extension of crops and among the main ones in Europe.

In 1856, Generali became the largest insurance company in the empire.

In 1857 the company was listed on the Trieste Stock Exchange.

With the unification of Italy, the Group's Venetian management became the largest insurance company in the new kingdom.

The leadership of the Group was entrusted to Mark Besso who in 1877 was appointed general secretary of the company.

Generali decides to expand internationally: opens agencies in the Mediterranean, in Russia and Eastern Europe and also enters the market in the Far East. Asia is one of its main markets. Generali is one of the leading European insurers in the Asian market and currently operates in eight territories. It has been operating in China since 2013 with Generali China Life, in partnership with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). In India and Malaysia Generali operates through joint venture agreements, respectively with Future Group and MPHB Capital Berhad. It also has operations in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

In Europe, subsidiary companies such as the Erste Allgemeine Schaden- und Unfallversicherung of Vienna, the Generate it in Romania, theAnonymous Hail andAnonymous Accidents in Milan.

After the end of the First World War there is a further international expansion of the company.
In 1924, Generali had eight managements abroad and sixty branches and agencies in thirty countries.

In 1934 Generali acquires Insurance Alliance, an Italian insurance company founded in Genoa in 1898.

In 1935, there were twenty-nine group companies in Europe, four in the Americas, two in Africa and one in Asia.

Having survived the Second World War unscathed, Generali developed further.

In 1963, through Generali France, founds Europ Assistance. Europ Assistance is, still today, one of the main global brands in the field of private assistance; is present in more than 200 countries and territories and offers insurance coverage and assistance in the travel sector, in the automotive sector with roadside assistance, and personalized coverage.

In 1968 he became president Cesare Merzagora which decides to reorganize the company in a more efficient and transparent way.

In 1980 entered the Hong Kong market with Hong Kong Generals. Here is the headquarters of the regional office (Generali Asia Regional Office), which coordinates the activities of the entire region.

In 1987 it entered the Swiss market through the acquisition and merger of numerous insurance companies.

In 1988, it strengthened its activities in France by acquiring a stake in Compagnie du Midi. The following year he became a shareholder of the French group AXA Mid (created to combine the holdings in the insurance sector of AXA and Compagnie du Midi) through the ownership of 40% of Investment Companies AxaGenerali, in turn a shareholder of AXIS with about 40%.

The end of the Cold War leads Generali to expand into the Eastern European market. It opens branches in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Croatia.

In 1990 AXA Midi merged into AXA SAS. Generali remains a shareholder with 40% of the share capital.

In December 2013, Alleanza Toro was closed. The Toro brand activities are separated from Alleanza Assicurazioni and merged into Generali Italia.

On June 11, 2014 he gave up Damage fairy to Cattolica Insurance for 194,7 million euros. Buys the remaining shares of Delta Osiguranje which is being renamed Generals Osiguranje Srbija.

In 2015, he bought 49% of the insurance company MPI extension in Malaysia and 3,85% in Cooperative Credit Bank (BCC).
