Hacker attack all over the world, even Chernobyl at risk

A hacker attack, similar to WannaCry, is currently underway in Russia and Ukraine. Affected large companies, disruptions in airports and subways, also attacked the Chernobyl plant. The attack is still ongoing and the media and investigators are trying to understand its true extent.

According to reports from the BBC, the attack has gradually spread and companies from all over the world would be targeted. Among the companies attacked are the Russian giant Rosneft, whose site is currently unreachable, Maersk, Danish group active in the fields of shipping, energy and shipbuilding, the advertising agency British Wpp And the society French Saint-Gobain. In Norway, the attack would have concerned the services of an unidentified "international company".

In Russia and Ukraine alone, there are around 80 companies "infected" by a virus, identified as Petya, which makes PC data and computer systems inaccessible by holding them hostage, with the aim of extorting money from the victims to unlock them. Electronic payments cannot be made in the Kiev Metro. There are flight delays at Borispil airport in Ukraine. In Russia, in addition to Bashneft and Rosneft, Mars and Nivea are also involved.

The hacker attack also affected the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This was reported by the Ukrainian site Kromadske. According to the National Agency for the Management of the Contaminated Area, the internal technical systems of the power plant "are functioning normally" and those that monitor "radiation levels" are "partially out of order". The power plant site is also inaccessible.

"It is the biggest intrusion in the history of Ukraine" Anton Gerashchenko, assistant to the interior minister, wrote on Twitter on Facebook. The goal is to "destabilize the economic situation and civil consciousness of Ukraine," he continued.
