Insurance: Aig, net profit more than doubled

The US insurer Aig more than doubled its net income in the first quarter of 2012, compared to the same period of 2011. The recorded profit was in fact 3,2 billion dollars, equal to 1,71 dollars per share, a significant increase compared to the same period of 2011 – when the profit was 1,3 billion, or 31 cents per share. At the time the the result had been conditioned by the heavy losses deriving from the devastating earthquake of 11 March in Japan and the return to the Federal Reserve of a portion of the credit received to avoid bankruptcy.

Operating revenue increased from $2,1 billion last year to $3,1 billion in 2012 ($1,65 per share, up from $1,34 a year ago). Analysts were expecting earnings of $1,12 per share.
