Ama: patent to say goodbye to landfill

From waste to asphalt for roads and car parks: from next October Ama will be the sole owner of a patent for the transformation of the stabilized organic fraction into asphalt – The savings compared to landfill disposal is estimated at 3-4 million euros per year – Ama will be able to sell the innovation in the rest of Italy.

Ama: patent to say goodbye to landfill

From organic material to eco-sustainable asphalt for the construction of roads or cycle paths. It is the Mineralized Biomass, a material produced using the so-called stabilized organic fraction produced by mechanical biological waste treatment plants (Tmb). A material that today the Capital disposes of in landfills but which Ama will soon be able to reuse as from next October it will be the sole owner of the patent for the production of MB already held today with the Material Development Center.

The goal is to start processing it as early as 2016, thus considerably reducing the amount of tonnes of residues to be transferred to landfills in Emilia Romagna and Lombardy, whose appeal was made necessary after the closure of Malagrotta. An 'environmental' gain but also an economic one. Transporting the approximately 90 tonnes of FoS produced each year by the capital to landfills has a cost and the savings are estimated at around 3-4 million euros. Furthermore, the new 'asphalt' will be produced by Ama and will be used for various interventions in the public works sector. Thanks to the Ama patent, it will be able to produce MB not only in the capital but also in the rest of Italy.
