ECB alarm: profits of Italian SMEs are falling, more credit is needed

An ECB report illustrates the continuous decline between last October and this March in profits and turnover of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Eurozone - Italian and Spanish SMEs are bad - Financing needs are growing, but the availability of bank loans is decreasing, in 10% decline.

According to research by the ECB, between October 2012 and March 2013 they continue to get worse profits and turnover of SMEs in the Eurozone, and in particular of the Spanish and Italian ones, which "have contributed more than all to the net increase in the need for bank loans and the increase in the overdraft". Throughout the Eurozone, the financing needs of small and medium-sized enterprises grew (+5%), in the face, moreover, of "a worsening in the availability of bank loans", down by 10%.

ECB loans to the private sector fell by 0,8% in March, while total ECB loans remained unchanged compared to February, when it fell by 0,2%. THE deposits of individuals at Italian banks increased by 3,1% in the same month.

However, as regards the data of the monetary mass M3, i.e. the amount of money circulating in the Union, growth slowed down to 2,6% against +3,1% in January.
