AgriTech: SmartIsland, startup of Digital Magics Palermo, prevents diseases and viruses

SmartIsland, innovative startup of Niscemi (Caltanissetta) which is developing technological products and services for the agro-food industries, join the team of Digital Magics Palermo: Sicilian office of Digital Magics, Business incubator listed on AIM Italia of Borsa Italiana, in collaboration with the partner company Factory Academy.

Digital Magics Palermo has acquired the 10% (Digital Magics 5%, Factory Academy 5%) of the share capital of SmartIsland and is supporting the AgriTech startup in the strategic and commercial development with the incubation services.

The first project conceived by the new digital enterprise is Smart farm: computer system for precision agriculture capable of preventing diseases, water stress, viruses and attacks by plant parasites, controlling, improving and automating the management of the entire production cycle with planning and correct dosages of irrigation and fertilization.

Thanks to an artificial intelligence robot, Smart Farm analyzes the soil and in particular the trace elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, becoming a innovative observation tool for water and land control, helping farms reducing working times and offsetting investments with a significant optimization of resources (labour, machines, energy and fertilizers).

Le IoT technologies (Internet of Things) of vision farming, developed by SmartIsland, are systems with software and hardware sensors (which detect information both from the field and during the production phase) for prevention, monitoring of health status and analysis of the needs of crops such as citrus fruits, vegetables, olive trees and vineyards, sending alerts on PCs, smartphones and tablets of farmers and farm managers.

Maria Luisa Cinquerrui, Founder and CEO of SmartIsland, said: “The AgriFood sector is increasingly broad and dynamic: it is estimated that worldwide there are 2,5 billion people who work in agriculture and 570 million farms, of which 513 million are family-run . With Smart Farm, which we will launch on the market in the first months of 2018, we want to apply the technologies of the Internet of Things to the cultivation of the land, because we are convinced that we can really improve some aspects of human life such as health and work".

Alessandro Arnetta, Founder and CEO of Factory Accademia and Partner of Digital Magics Palermo, states: "SmartIsland is the third subsidiary of our incubator in Sicily, after Morpheos and SpidWit, and represents the perfect example of how innovation can create Industry 4.0 and Enterprise 4.0 even in such a traditional market as agriculture. The mission, the advanced technology and the heterogeneous and extremely complete skills of the team have literally conquered us. We are convinced that this startup has all the credentials, starting from the original and scalable business model, to conquer international markets in the coming years".
