Saipem, Leonardo and Danieli have signed a cooperation agreement to modify the typical steel production process thanks to the use of electric and hybrid powered furnaces integrated with methane and hydrogen plants to produce green steel.

Steel: trio of aces for green conversion projects

Steel agreement between Saipem, Leonardo and Danieli. The three companies have signed a cooperation agreement on projects for the sustainable conversion of energy intensive primary plants in the iron and steel sector, both in Italy, particularly in the south, and abroad.

Going into the details of the agreement, Saipem, Leonardo and Danieli "propose the joint supply of technologies and services aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the steel production process to create an innovative and sustainable model consistent with current environmental regulations and with the national and community objectives of reduction of CO2 emissions also in line with the reduction targets established during the Paris COP agreement”, reads a joint note.

Thanks to the new technologies made available, the conventional steel production process, based on blast furnaces, will be replaced by a new process which the use of hybrid electrically powered kilns integrated with plants for the direct reduction of iron ore by means of a mixture of methane and hydrogen which makes it possible to obtain green steel with limited emissions of Green House Gas.

As regards the role of each company under the agreement, Danieli will be the contractor for the supply of direct reduction technological equipment and electric furnaces; Saipem will take care of the on-site construction of the plants, integrating technologies and skills in the natural gas, hydrogen and CO2 capture supply chains; Leonardo, through the Cyber Security Division, will play the role of digital and security technological partner for integrated solutions in the Industry 4.0 area aimed at optimizing production processes in safety, as well as for the protection of physical and digital components.

A Business Square, following the announcement, Saipem shares top the Ftse Mib with a rise of 3,72%, driven by the oil rally that has been underway for a few days. Instead, Leonardo (-0,4%) and Danieli (-1%) travel below parity.
