Urbano Cairo and Mario Draghi: overrated by whom? The unforgivable blunder of the Corriere della Sera editor.

In his interview with Il Foglio, the editor of Corriere and La7 evidently wanted to give both sides a blow by reassuring Meloni and Schlein, but his merciless judgments on Mario Draghi are unforgivable.

Urbano Cairo and Mario Draghi: overrated by whom? The unforgivable blunder of the Corriere della Sera editor.

I wonder if Urban Cairo he will have regretted the interview he gave to “Sheet" on Thursday in which he, as usual, gives both sides a blow, but is unable to avoid some unpleasant blunders. Judging from the letter of correction sent yesterday to "Il Foglio" to correct some of his unfair judgments on the very good co-director of the Corriere della Sera, Fiorenza SarzaniniCairo must have bitten his tongue a little. But if his goal was to comb the dolls' hair to keep everyone happy (“Schlein can be prime minister” and “Meloni can go to the Colle”), the mission has been accomplished. A bit like what he does with the Corriere, with the Mentana news and with La7 talk show, cleverly oriented in different directions: a wink to the Corriere della Sera government, a marked impartiality in the news and an often excessive hymn to the left-wing opposition in the talk shows. To the great joy of advertising revenue, which is the profession that Cairo, raised under the wing of Marcello Dell'Utri and Silvio Berlusconi, has always been able to do better. But this time cunning has not prevented the Alexandrian publisher from making dangerous blunders like the one on Mario Draghi, a civil servant that the whole world envies us not only because in 2012 he saved the euro in three words (“Whatever it takes“) but also for how he governed in the midst of the pandemic. It would be enough to reread the pages of the Corriere to remember how from February 2021 to October 2022 Draghi was able to relaunch the economy, defeat Covid by relying on General Son and give Italy an international authority it hasn't had since. So what right does Cairo have today to say that "Draghi is overrated"? Perhaps the RCS boss wanted to reassure Meloni and Schlein, who view the electoral draw as a red flag, that his media outlets won't support future technocratic governments, but there are ways to do so. And a blunder remains a blunder.
