Ottaviano del Turco: the trade unionist and socialist politician has passed away, he was 79 years old

Ottaviano Del Turco has died, former president of the Abruzzo region, former minister of the Amato Government, senator and deputy. He was deputy secretary of Luciano Lama's CGIL and then secretary of the Psi. She was 79 years old.

The news was given by his son Guido with a post on Facebook. “Hi dad. I loved you. A lot. And thank you for letting me stay next to you for 15 years, when the sea went stormy,” wrote Guido Del Turco.

Who was Ottaviano Del Turco

Politician and trade unionist, Del Turco was born in Collelongo, in the province of L'Aquila, on 7 November 044, and moved to Rome where he soon began working in CGIL, he entered the provincial secretariat of Fiom, the metalworkers of the CGIL, as an exponent of the socialist area.

In '93 came the leap into politics: Del Turco became national secretary of the PSI, taking over from Giorgio Benvenuto. He was Finance Minister of the Amato government (2000-2001), president of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission from 1996 to 2000 and president of the Abruzzo Region (2005-2008). He was also a European parliamentarian elected on the Ulivo list and in 2007 he participated in the founding of the Democratic Party.

In the course of his political activity he came involved in some investigations on the management of private healthcare. He was acquitted of almost all charges, but resigned from the leadership of the Abruzzo region.

Bobo Craxi: “A socialist of faith and heart”

“Ottaviano del Turco has left us. After years of health and judicial ordeal he passed away in his home in Collelongo" Bobo Craxi wrote on Facebook.

“A profoundly unjust and premature end of a man who in his life served the causes of workers, of Italian socialism and represented the interests of his Region and our Nation. The union leader, the political leader, the man who lived an important piece of this country's history in important positions with intensity and commitment leaves us. The companion with whom we fought together leaves us, we also discussed dividing ourselves in a dramatic period of our history, the friend with whom we spoke about art, music, history and not only politics and with whom together we spent several hours of our lives. A Socialist leaves us. Octavian was a Socialist of faith and heart. I am painfully close to Guido, Cristina, the whole family and his companions who have eased his suffering in recent years."
