In Austria break through the black wave ofultra-right: I'FPO, a party accused of Nazi sympathies and anti-Semitism, exceeds expectations in the elections for the renewal of Parliament and reaches almost 30 percent of the votes. The OVP collapses of Chancellor Karl Nehammer (with a drop of 11 percentage points), but now it is a government conundrum. In Austria, in fact, the election results speak clearly: the party of theultra-right is leading the 29,2 % while the Ovp, the Popular Party of Nehammer is at 26,5 %.

Austria results: far right breaks through but now it's a government puzzle

In Vienna and not only, in fact, the reasoning revolves around possible coalitions which should have a minimum of 92 seats. The secretary general of the FPO, Christian Hafenecker, has already implicitly called for the resignation of OVP leader Nehammer: “If you have suffered such a historic defeat, then in reality there is only one consequence,” he added.
But they are the USEFULL to make the scenario more complicated. Yes, because according to the projections on the deputies of the lower house of the Vienna Parliament, the Fpo conquers 58 seats (+27 compared to the last elections), the OVP 52 (-19) and the Spo 41 seats. Next, we should consider the liberals of Neos and the Greens, the former with 17 seats, the seconds with 15. However, it is unlikely that the FPO will be able to lead a government. In order to obtain a majority, in fact, at least 92 of the 183 seats are needed of the Nationalrat (the lower house of the Austrian Parliament). The far right would therefore need an ally at its side in order to reach 92, but the only politically closest party, the OVP, has already announced that it has no intention of participating in government agreements Freedom Party of Austria.
Austria: Who is Kickl and why is there a veto on him?
Herbert Kickl, 55 years old, Carinthian, current leader of the FPO and Minister of the Interior in 2017, has already announced that, once victory is in his pocket, he will be the “People's Chancellor” (i.e. “the people's chancellor”). Well, if the FPO sticks to the logic of the Spitzenkandidat, confirming Kickl as its centre-forward, the People's Party will close the door and aim for a coalition with the Social Democrats and the Greens. If they sacrifice him, then the OVP could even start negotiations. The People's Party, on the other hand, will be able to count on the sponda of the Austrian president, Alexander Van der Bellen. According to the constitution, the president appoints the government and can reject candidates for chancellor and minister: as a former leader of the Green Party – with a visceral dislike for the FPO – Van der Bellen does not seem inclined to allow a far-right ideologue to take power.
