From Milan to New York, from Tokyo to Warsaw: the pecorino cheese It is no longer just a famous cheese, but a white wine that is conquering the world. Thanks to Tollo Group Winery, the historic Abruzzo cooperative that launched its roadshow international, “10 Shades of Pecorino Grapes”, to bring the symbolic vine of Abruzzo into the global spotlight.
Departed on January 16th from Milan, this trip in 10 stages will cross three continents during 2025, bringing the best pecorino-based wines to the tables of journalists and industry professionals in cities such as New York, Toronto, Hanoi, London and Moscow, to name a few. The tour will end in Rome, but not before having told half the planet all the nuances – or rather, the ten references – of this native white wine, which expresses its best in Abruzzo.
Pecorino: a heroic and versatile grape variety
What makes Pecorino so special? This native Abruzzo grape variety manages to surprise thanks to its versatility and the bond with the territory. Cantina Tollo interprets it in 10 different declinations, from the fresh and festive bubble to the spontaneously fermented organic version, up to the wines aged in amphora or produced with heroic viticulture at 800 meters above sea level.
That's not all: four of these labels bear the signature of Ancient Feud, the cooperative’s high-end brand, and include gems such as the “Tullum Docg”, the “Tullum Docg Organic spontaneous fermentation” and the “Casadonna Pecorino Terre Aquilane Igp”.
The success of Pecorino in numbers
It's not just a matter of taste. The numbers tell us how this grape variety is experiencing a real golden moment. Pecorino today represents 13% of the total turnover of bottles bottled by Cantina Tollo, with sales that exceeded 4 million euros. Over the past two years, sales volumes have grown by 26%, and 20% of the pecorino produced is organic.
“Pecorino is a unique product, which is gaining more and more space thanks to the growing demand for typical and native white wines”, he says Sandro Ciavattella, general manager of Cantina Tollo. “We were among the first to believe in the potential of this variety” and with the roadshow, “we want to introduce to international markets all the possible interpretations of this wine, capable of conquering modern consumers, increasingly interested in fresh, long-lived and versatile white wines”.
