Great performance for Marujo 2016, the pure Syrah wine, produced by Casteani Estate of Gavorrano (Grosseto), who won the Platinum medal with 97/100 from "Decanters”, the English magazine that has been organizing the “Decanter World Wine Awards”, one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world, with the contribution of the most authoritative experts and professionals in the wine business. The award is internationally recognized for the reliability of the rigorous tasting and selection process. And Casteani's Syrah is an important recognition for the Maremma land, one of the youngest wine-growing areas in Tuscany, but with enormous potential. The bet was won by Mario Pelosi, an engineer, who 20 years ago started the Casteani Estate from scratch, a new winery on land that was already mining, relying on the quality of the territory and its great resources.

«That of Gavorran is a territory capable of creating great grapes and great wines - observes Pelosi - a complex terrain of gravel, clay, silt, hilly, difficult, almost heroic. But able to give its grapes a strong and distinctive character, characteristics that are very present in the bunches of Syrah which, planted in 2006, is entering its full maturity expressing wines of great power and refinement. The Syrah is fermented in terracotta jars from Impruneta which allow the must to undergo micro-oxygenation without the influence of the tannins from the wood. The wine is left to rest in contact with the skins for several weeks before racking, allowing for greater extraction of anthocyanins and polyphenols and after racking, it rests for another 12 months, always in amphora». The method is new but takes up the millenary Etruscan tradition in a modern key. In the nearby Etruscan necropolis in ancient amphorae cataloged from about 4000 years ago grape seeds were found as proof that this land was already cultivated millennia before and then, after the Roman domination, almost abandoned.

And in fact, explains Pelosi, «we have rediscovered the great Etruscan tradition which was very flourishing in these areas 2000 years before the birth of Christ, as scholars have been able to verify by analyzing the contents of some amphorae found during excavations in the necropolis of the area . A great tradition almost contemporary to the Greek one, which demonstrates how the Maremma was one of the first areas where vines were grown in Italy. This diversity, rediscovered for about 30 years in this area, has allowed us to deepen a new production methodology which, with our oenologists Attilio Pagli and Laura Zuddas, has given us remarkable results culminating in this important international recognition which honors us, but above all honors the oenology of the Grosseto Maremma». The Marujo 2016 has a deep and brilliant ruby red colour. Excellent olfactory complexity ranging from red fruits, accompanied by earthy notes, pungent black pepper, leather and Mediterranean scrub, up to the floral violet. Wide and enveloping mouth with a long finish, supported by excellent acidity and flavor. Pleasantly silky tannins. Analytical parameters: alcohol 14 vol.; total acidity 5,0 g/l; residual sugars 0,8 g/l.
