Phillips October Photographs Auctions Realizes $5,9 million with works by Cindy Sherman, Wolfgang Tillmans, Richard Avedon and Robert Mapplethorpe lead sales

Record for photographs from the collection of Ed Cohen and Victoria Shaw

Photography demonstrates a growing interest from international collectors, especially towards rare and extremely high-level works. The October 4 sales saw bids from six continents as collectors competed for rare and important images across the 20th and 21st centuries, leading to the most successful online performance ever at a photography auction at Phillips. Untitled #296 by Cindy Sherman, created during her collaboration with Rei Kawakubo in 1994, grossed over the $325.000 estimate.
Comments Caroline Deck, Senior Specialist at Phillips: “We have been honored to work with Mr Cohen and Ms Shaw in offering these works from their outstanding collection. The sale was led by Richard Avedon's iconic Marilyn Monroe, in New York City on May 6, 1957, which sold for $250.000. Francesca Woodman's works also performed exceptionally with Space2's Providence, Rhode Island, 1976 selling for over three times its estimate at $125.000 and with Rome, 1977-1978 also selling above estimates. The photographs in Mr. Cohen and Ms. Shaw's collection present the many unique ways of looking at the world and we are delighted that they have found buyers who will appreciate their significance. ”
