Marine news: trial suspended in India

Appeal accepted and trial suspended for the two marines. The Indian Supreme Court accepted the appeal presented by the lawyers of Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, taking the case off the counter-terrorism police Nia e suspending the trial against the two Italian soldiers at the special court. The next hearing will be held in four weeks.

This is a second victory for Italy: after having managed to avert the risk that your Act (the anti-terrorism law which also provides for the death penalty) was used against the marines, our country has obtained that the judiciary Indiana recognized the thesis according to which the NIA can only deal with terrorism cases.

In any case, Italy is aiming for concerted and broader international action, not recognizing Indian jurisdiction over the case. The appeal accepted today "completely contests India's right to conduct the investigation and to judge the marines", said legal sources at the end of the hearing.

Yesterday Matteo Renzi spoke to US President Barack Obama about the case: “We talked about the story of the two marines illegally detained in India – said the Premier -. I thanked the US Government for the support it has given in this stage of international discussions and I asked President Obama to be able to count on further support”.
